§ 8.13. Fire chief

  • The fire chief shall perform duties such as may be required of him by the city council. He plans, organizes and coordinates the prevention and suppression of structural and brush fires and provision of rescue services. He takes command of major fires, oversees the maintenance of fire stations and equipment, develops and conducts training programs for fire personnel. He shall be chosen solely on his comprehensive knowledge of the principles and practices of modern firefighting and of the law, ordinances, rules and regulations pertaining to the operation of a municipal fire department, of operation and maintenance of firefighting equipment and good knowledge of first aid. The fire chief shall be appointed by the city manager with the approval of the city council for an indefinite term, as provided by V.T.C.A., Local Government Code § 341.001 et seq. He shall meet the standards of V.T.C.A., Local Government Code § 143.001 et seq. The fire chief shall be responsible to the city manager for the administration of his department and the carrying out of the directives of the city council. The fire chief may be removed by the city manager with the approval of the city council.
