§ 8.12. Chief of police

  • The chief of police shall be the chief administrative officer of the department of police. He shall preserve order within the city and make secure the residents of the City of Palestine, and shall perform such duties as may be required of him by the city council. He shall, with the approval of the city manager, appoint and remove the employees and police personnel of said department. The chief of police shall be appointed by the city manager with the approval of the city council for an indefinite term, as provided by V.T.C.A., Local Government Code § 341.001 et seq. The chief of police shall meet the standards of V.T.C.A., Local Government Code § 143.001 et seq. He shall be responsible to the city manager for the administration of his department and the carrying out of the directives of the city council. The chief of police may be removed from office by the city manager with the approval of the city council.
